How does one decide which color is better? What are the numbers associated with each board?
Stockfish is one of the best computer chess programs
and is much better than humans.
Its inputs are an arrangement of chess pieces on the board and whether it's White's or Black's turn.
The output is a numerical evaluation and the best move in its opinion.
White is better if the number is positive and Black is better if the number is negative.
Does this mean a human playing White/Black will always win a position with a positive/negative evaluation?
No. It depends on the skill of the players, the magnitude of the evaluation, the time left in the game,
and an element of luck.
How did you make this site?
Using chess.com's API, I downloaded
the list of all members of Gotham's Club on chess.com. I then obtained one recent game per player and
one position per game. I used Stockfish 13 to evaluate positions using a time limit of 1 minute per position.
Then, I stipulated that the corresponding games must have lasted at least 20 moves,
the positions must have arisen after at least 10 moves, and that the evaluation
must be below an absolute value of 10.
I was aided greatly by the freely available
libraries chessboard.js,
chess.js and
python-chess.
Is the site free to use?
Yes. The site costs very little if the traffic is low.
